Maths

Mathematics is a core subject within the National Curriculum.  The New Mathematics Curriculum programmes of study were implemented from September 2014 and our programme is delivered via the White Rose schemes of learning throughout the school.

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

We want all our children to succeed in mathematics and more children are doing so. We want them to be excited by mathematics and to continue to study the subject well beyond their primary education. We want children to see how mathematics can help them become better equipped for future life.

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

To support these key aims, teachers will develop children’s understanding of the mathematical operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division alongside linked work to other core learning strands of maths such as place value, fractions/decimals, geometry, statistics and measurement.  We will use a range of mathematical  equipment, pictures and models to provide support for these areas.  We will develop children’s confidence and fluency in maths to enable them to succeed in their lifelong mathematical learning.

INTERNET GAMES & ACTIVITIES:

  • MY MATHS (Our school is subscribed to MyMaths to support children in their mathematical learning.  Some maths homework my be set through MyMaths and there are also lots of extra activities for your children. Please see your child’s teacher for further information.)

Finding odd and even numbers:

  • MATHS BOT (If you want some extra maths activities to practice at home, MATHSBOT.COM will generate questions/quizzes for you.  Try out the differentiated questions , the starter generator (quick questions that can be timed) and the topic ladder (questions on a given topic).  Please note that some of the content on the website goes beyond primary level.)
  • TIMES TABLES ROCK STARS (Children can practice their times tables alongside rock music! A fun way of practicing times tables.)

Please note that these apps have been tested on Apple devices at school. Many of these apps are also available on Android devices via the Google Store.

Bee-Bot App (iPhone & iPad – Free) A digital version of the Bee-Bot.  Children have navigate Bee-Bot to a goal using turn left/right and move forward/backward commands.  A great app to follow up and support work with the real Bee-Bots in class. (see also Blue-Bot App)

Super 7 App (iPhone & iPad – 79p)  A simple game of number bonds to 7.  Children need to drag different numbers together to make 7, with increasing difficulty as the game progresses eg. inclusion of minus numbers and operations such as x2. 

Math Duel App (iPhone & iPad – £2.29) A two person challenge game (there is also a single player mode).  The app allows 2 people to play against each other to work out mental maths questions.  Difficulty is customisable for each player so different ability levels can still challenge each other. 

Chicken Coop Fractions App (iPhone & iPad – Free) A fractions/decimals number line game with adjustable difficulty settings.  Place the nest where the chickens should fire their egg for a given fraction.  If the egg misses the nest it gets fried!

Shapes 3D App (iPhone & iPad – £2.99) A 3D shape app—allows children to manipulate a range of 3D shapes and supports visualisation of various concepts including the ability to show vertices/edges and make shapes transparent.  Also allows users to unfold shapes and see their nets.

Mr Thorne’s Times Tables Terra App (iPhone & iPad – £1.99) A fun times-tables practice app, with different levels of difficulty.
